Our New Kitchen Island

Our New Kitchen Island

I have been meaning to share some photos of the most recent addition to our home… a kitchen island that my husband, Jesse, built! I absolutely love the way it turned out!:) Jesse pretty much always has a building project he is either working on or planning for, which is so fun for me.  He enjoys building and I enjoy what he makes, so it works pretty well!:)

What is super exciting to me about this piece is that the top is made from local barn wood.  Jesse collected the wood from the barn ruins, sanded it down, and joined the beams to create the top surface of the island. I love the natural look it provides and the little imperfections, cracks, and rusty nail heads reveal the age of the wood.   I really think these marks give such character.

It has a lot of extra storage space too, which has been wonderful. I really appreciate when pieces are beautiful  and functional!

The bottom part of the island was painted with Miss Mustard Seed Grainsack Milk Paint (we love this paint – its seriously amazing paint and there are so many fun colors to try!)

The metal shelf supports were from Hobby Lobby, and painted with the Grainsack Milk Paint as well. I think we will be distressing those very soon.
Kitchen Island 7We were given the stools and painted them with Miss Mustard Seed Lucketts Green Milk Paint.

And if you are wondering where that beautiful bowl came from… it is an Arryn Vogan Pottery Original! Its beautiful, and it is so big… perfect for a fruit bowl or to serve a large salad!

Have a wonderful day!:)

  2. Hi Melissa. I discovered your blog today via Miss Mustard Seed. My husband is an artist, too, and I really appreciate your talent. I checked out your shop, and I’m following you on Facebook. Love what you do. I blog at A Joyful Cottage and started a new blog party Every Room In The House. It’s a month-long party which features a different room in the house each month. This month we’re partying in The Kitchen, and I’d love it if you’d link up your kitchen island. Here’s the link: http://www.ajoyfulcottage.com/2014/01/every-room-in-house-party-1.html
I hope you’ll join us. Warmest regards, Nancy @ A Joyful Cottage.

  3. Hi Melissa! I’ve featured your delightful island in this month’s Every Room In The House party. Thanks for sharing with us, and I hope you’ll continue to join in the fun. This month we’re partying in The Living Room. Hugs ~ Nancy
