My name is Melissa Ellen. I am a wife, a mother, an artist, seeking to live a creative life with intention, conviction, and honest expression.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I married my best friend and vision maker. We live in Western New York in what we like to call our little 1870’s farmhouse, with our two children and 13 chickens. I am a stay at home mama, continually learning to find beauty in simple, everyday things and to be present in each moment. I still have a lot of learning to do! These days creating happens in my home studio between laundry, dishes, and playing with my little ones.
I never imagined that my love for creating would turn into much more than a hobby, but I am so thankful that it has. Growing up I was often found doodling, playing with clay, creating handmade cards, and engaging in any craft project that I could get my hands on. Fast forward several years to my second year of marriage during which I was working as a college resident director and finishing my last semester of graduate school. I was gifted an online mixed media art class (by artist and teacher Jeanne Oliver) that my husband had stumbled upon and thought I might enjoy. This class changed the trajectory of my journey. I immediately began the class and found myself finishing up grad work as quickly as possible so that I could get to creating and practicing the things I was learning. I graduated in May 2013 with a Masters in Student Affairs/Counseling, decided to start my own creative business (which was a HUGE step for my introverted, insecure self) and I haven’t turned back since.
Creating and Sharing art has played a significant role in my story and changing the ‘not enough’ narrative I believed for too long. Creating requires courage and vulnerability which are not natural or easy for me. Painting continually forces me to face the fear of failure; to allow myself freedom to fail. I believe there is so much beauty to be found in what may appear broken and messy. Every beautiful journey has bumpy places along the road. I am passionate about authenticity and I believe that beauty is created from an honest expression of the heart.
Most of my creative inspiration comes from beauty found in our everyday: trees, flowers, pastures, sheep, rolling hills, unique architecture, beautiful children, history, and anything that tells a story. Through my art I hope to inspire, give hope, reflect beauty and truth, offering encouragement to those who view it. I believe that every story matters and I want my art to tell a story that brings meaning to yours.
